Disaster & Emergency Preparedness
It is important for seniors and caregivers to not only prepare for
changes related to aging but also for disasters or emergencies. Below are links to organizations
that offer information and tools to help prepare.
Avian Flu
H5N1 (also known as Avian Influenza, Avian Flu, or Bird Flu) is a
strain of the flu found in birds that has transferred to around 200
people. Health experts are concerned that Avian Flu may become the
next pandemic. A pandemic is a disease that occurs over a wide area to
many people. For more information about Avian Flu and how to prepare,
visit the
Minnesota Department of Health (Off Site).
Natural Disasters
Minnesota experiences a wide range of temperatures and weather.
Natural disasters such as tornadoes, droughts, floods, wild fires,
severe thunderstorms and blizzards occur all over the state. Learn
more about ways to plan for natural disasters from the
Minnesota
Department of Public Safety Homeland Security and Emergency Management
(Off Site).
Terrorism
Terrorism has become a real threat to personal, community and national
safety. While Minnesota has not been considered a primary target for
acts of terrorism, it is important to be prepared. Learn how to create
a family planning kit for terrorism from the U.S. Department of
Homeland Security's
Ready.gov website (Off Site).
