Food & Other Nutrition
Several agencies provide meals to
seniors and persons with disabilities. There are agencies that provide
food for persons with lower incomes, sites that are set up to provide
meals for people wishing to share meals together, and assistance for
those who are home-bound and cannot purchase or make their own food.
Congregate Dining
Many subsidized housing sites and senior centers provide community meals around the noon hour for
seniors. These sites are able to provide a hot meal and the
atmosphere of friends sharing together. Some senior centers to provide culturally-specific meals.
Food Shelves
Food shelves are available throughout the seven-county metro area to
provide supplemental and emergency food for people.
Food Support Program
The Food Support program is a
county-administered, federal program that assists people and families
with low incomes to purchase food and better meet their nutritional
needs. The program is not intended to supply all of a person's or
family’s food needs. Instead, it is a supplement to help them achieve
or maintain independence.
Grocery Delivery
Some agencies deliver groceries to the home-bound
and those who are unable to go grocery shopping for themselves.
These agencies take orders from their clients and set up times to
deliver the groceries. Often they will provide a staff member who can
assist in carrying the groceries into the house and putting
them away.
Home Delivered Meals
Meals-on-Wheels programs deliver hot meals to home-bound people over
60 years of age. This program is designed to help people stay in their
own homes by providing daily, nutritious, hot noon meals.
