Employment and Volunteer Opportunities

Services are offered by public and non-profit agencies to assist older adults in finding and obtaining employment and volunteer opportunities.  These agencies sometimes offer employment or volunteer opportunities within their agencies, but more often help people find opportunities in the greater community.

Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging
The Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging (MAAA) provides telephone and in-person health insurance counseling services to Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers. Learn more about opportunities to volunteer with MAAA.

Senior Community Service Employment
Senior Community Service Employment is offered through various agencies to adults age 55 and older whose income is at or below 125% of federal poverty guidelines. Call the Senior LinkAge Lineâ at 1-800-333-2433 to access these agencies.

Minnesota Workforce Centers
Minnesota Workforce Centers are one-stop agencies that provide employment and training services in convenient and easily accessible locations. Services may include job counseling, testing and assessment; resume preparation assistance, interview training and other pre-job guidance services; job matching and referral; unemployment insurance and job registration; labor market and career information; information on financial aid for education and training; and referral for job training, transportation, child care, personal and financial counseling, health care and other human services resources in the community. State rehabilitation services are provided for persons age 18 and over with disabilities. Visit
www.mnwfc.org (Off Site) for specific locations and employment opportunities.

Employment for People on Social Security
Social Security often allows those receiving Social Security to earn additional income without penalty. If someone is certified disabled by the Social Security Administration, employment may still be an option. Visit www.socialsecurity.gov
(Off Site) for specifics.

Medical Assistance for Employed Persons with Disabilities
MA-EPD allows working people with disabilities to qualify for MA under higher income and asset limits than standard MA. The goal of the program is to encourage people with disabilities to work and enjoy the benefits of being employed. Visit the Minnesota Department of Human Services (Off Site) for more information.

Volunteer Opportunities
Making a difference in the lives of others is an important component of healthy aging. There are numerous short and long-term opportunities in the community. Visit the Hands on Twin Cities (Off Site) and the Minnesota Senior Corps to learn more about volunteer opportunities in the Metro area. There are many ways for older adults to share their strengths. The term "civic engagement" is used to describe citizen participation in civic affairs. In the public arena, there are a lot of ways of participating and being heard. Through citizen participation, older adults can influence change that benefits their families and communities. Learn more about civic engagement from the Vital Aging Network (VAN) (Off Site).
